Pub Quiz! Which pub is this?
"The seats outside are even better positioned for totty spotting, but you'll have to contend with the close proximity of the road and the traffic fumes interfering with the taste of your pint, though since the lager of choice in [this pub] is Carlsberg that isn't necessarily a bad thing."
Answer...
The Black Lion is, unsurprisingly, to be found on Black Lion Street. The history of the Black Lion dates back to the 16th Century when Derrick Carver came to Brighton from Flanders to escape religious persecution; unfortunately he didn't learn his lesson and keep quiet about his religious beliefs when he got to England, this schoolboy error lead to him being burned at the stake in Lewes in 1555. But before he was toasted he managed to set up the Black Lion Brewery, from which the Black Lion pub descends.
The Black Lion has been recently taken over and renovated by Zelgrain Ltd, who own a string of pubs in Brighton, including The Mash Tun and The Fishbowl. Zelgrain's vision was to "maintain the Black Lion's tradition whilst importing a sense of cutting edge modernism". What this has actually involved is keeping the look of the outside of the building but completely renovating the interior, so when you see the Black Lion from outside you'd think "traditional pub", but inside that isn't what you get. The bar is one large open plan room broken up with large arches, very light and airy; it seems to have a bit of a Mediterranean feel to it.
One of Zelgrain's aims was to limit environmental impact, so we're told that the electricity is supplied by a wind powered electricity company and the furniture is made of recycled material; so you can sit back drinking vast quantities of alcohol safe in the knowledge that the only thing being harmed is your health. One thing that doesn't quite fit with this recyclable environmental policy however, is the coal effect gas fire, especially since it's positioned half way up the wall ignoring the fundamental fact that heat rises; heating a room from the top down is hardly the most efficient way of doing things, just make sure you have warm socks on if you go to the Black Lion in the winter. Alongside the gas fire on the walls are a number of paintings that you can put a bid in for, if you like the look of one; prices are "negotiable", which is clearly an open invitation for some drunken haggling.
In common with the other pubs in the Zelgrain chain the Black Lion offers a decent range of beers, lagers and spirits and does a decent selection of food. What it doesn't offer is much in the way of entertainment and it certainly isn't interested in attracting the football crowd. Review by mr_psm

The lovely licensee at the Black Lion is illegal.
You might think she's French, and therefore ok under EU RULES, BUT SHE'S NOT....she's Canadian.
She got her licence while on a student visa, (oooops... NOT ALLOWED).... and she's now being deported.
A big chunk of every pound you spend in there goes into her pocket, tax-free, to be exported for her own use
She doesn't deserve it.
Well, at last the illegal bitch of a licensee at the Black Lion has been deported. And not before time!!!! (Even though she has run off with about £10,000 in unpaid tax - stolen from you and me!)
She's been replaced by Pauline,.... and she is gorgeous.... and really, truly French.
She's worthy of your support.... whereas the last cow wasn't.
Oh... just a thought.... I wonder how much Zelgrain knew of this illegal activity that's just come to an end?
Oh the justice in the system..... Pascal and pauline seem to have materalized from a like minded foreign system of communication....both inaduquate of professionalism toward themselves and other members of staff.
i do wonder who is exploiting who?
on one level zel reliquish a tiny amount of control to their staff, eneough for some to believe they are exempt from any association from the wider world, which is then transposed on to the rest of the staff.
It is not that pascal is canadian or pauline is french...it's the responsibility that zel should have to the rest of the staff involved,to employ
managers that are competent and provide a good working enviroment....to make consistant mistakes some what inplies that they themeselves do not really know what they are doing!!
Take heed....Don't work for zel as you may end up at the Black Lion!
I would like to inform the pub going world that the Black Lion's bouncers are facists. As a group of five girls and two men, we were denied entry simply because we were from Crawley. While waiting for a number of friends who were already in there, despite also being from Crawley, we questioned this policy. Then when we left with our friends my girlfriend was called a "fat slag". We went on to have a lovely night at The Prodigal nearby. I would suggest that any sensible person avoid The Black Lion at all costs.
never go to this pub as the manager is a racist bitch!! that need and good smack in the face, me and my friends were having a nice drink wen for no reason we was told to leave! we wasnt acting any different frm any others around us and the only reason was because of our skin colour, only way that this was varified because of a bouncer that worked there told me that, 'this wasnt the first time'!!
