Pub Quiz! Which pub is this?
"The handdrier is a model called 'Cyclone' which frankly, can only lead to disappointmemt on use."
Answer...
The phrase "An Englishman's home is his castle" would not have come about if castles actually resembled the Dartmouth Castle - if they did you may as well say an Englishman's home is his corridor, cause that's more what this is like. A little bit small. But that's not so bad, the result is that it always seems busy and with the jukebox cranked up it has an atmosphere. There's also a beer garden out the front. Or at least a beer patio, right next to the road which often has traffic queued on it - so if you like a bit of carbon monoxide with your beer to increase the effects of the intoxication, the Dartmouth Castle is the place to go.
Directly across the road is Citibank, ironically located not in the city at all. Ladies, if you're being chatted up by a bloke, who in response to your "Where do you work?" question replies "In the city" be sure to leave enough time for him to say "...bank building across the road.". Don't be caught out by cheap imitations. The chances are you won't find many Citibank employees in the Dartmouth Castle though, it's not quite posh enough, they're more likely to be found at The Stonemason's Arms down the road.
The surprising thing about this pub is the combined Guy/snowman effigy sitting on a deck chair hanging above the bar. Whether this is a "This is all the decorations you're gonna get out of us, so enjoy" type statement or whether there is some other strange significance we're missing, we're not quite sure. Mind you, if this is a combined seasonal decorative attempt, they could have at least put a Witch's hat on it in a vague acknowledgment of Halloween. Come on, be fair. If you really want to know you could ask the barmaid. She's gorgeous, second best in Hammersmith.
Update The effigy above the bar has gone. We can only wait with eager anticipation for the festive season to come around again to see if it reappears. Review by AJS

The Dartmouth Castle is my local. Great authentic olde style bar - loads of classic furnishings, dumb waiter etc. Has tvs for sporting events, no gorgeous barmaid that I have seen, just a random assortment of aussie and kiwi blokes. Clientel mainly drunken scots. Good pub.
Hi there
I find it interesting that this is your local and that you completed your update today 13th Oct 2002 but you have failed to mention the big screen and the fact that sky has been available for six years. Th e fantastic food including the £2.95 sunday roast! Or the amazing bar staff which are all the reasons why you make this your local!!! PS dont be afraid to approach Denis he's not that bad!!!
Hi Scott,
The Dartmouth Castle is jj's local, not ours (in fact noone involved with this site lives in Hammersmith any more).
The update time of the review reflects the fact that some background details about the pub have been changed, not the review itself, unfortunately. I'd fix it if I could be arsed, but I'm off to do some research along Shepherd's Bush Road tonight and I'm in a hurry. ;-)
Thanks for the comments about the Castle. You have been there a lot more recently than we have, obviously!
The Dartmouth Castle has recently had a revamp which has made it even better if slightly less pub-fusty.
I don't know if there is Sky Sports or even a TV, quite probably it does, is that the only reason people go into pubs?
The previous reviews are so out of date that there's no point even having any reviews. There are no Aussies or Kiwis working at this bar, the food is excellent (it's been rated in both the AA and Michelin Guide), the upstairs area is open for anyone, but is sometimes reserved at no cost for people wanting to have functions, they have 3 real ales on tape, 7 lagers (5 premium) and a wine list of 45 wines (17 by the glass), the owners also own the Atlas in West Brompton and The Swan in Chiswick and the beer garden protects customers from the street with walls and high planters, large umbrellas and heaters.
P.S. No bloody sky sports! The only sports shown are big matches such as the Rugby World Cup, Wimbledon and 6 Nations.
