Pub Quiz! Which pub is this?
"Sharing a single entrance to the male and female toilets, with a non-existent men's toilet door, and a urinal perpendicular to the doorway, having a pee here is an exhibitionist's dream ... You're peeing sideways on, and in full view of the women entering their toilets"
Answer...
The Good Companion is the sort of pub you expect to find out in the countryside; a huge pub with a big car park, built for groups and families out for a pub lunch. From the advert for "The Giant’s Plate” outside, to the oversized menu on every table, it’s clear that food is what the pub wants to sell and the reason many of the visitors choose this particular pub from the extensive choice that Portsmouth offers. The location certainly isn’t the draw, situated on a main road opposite a cemetery means it’s hardly in the most salubrious of locations.
The Good Companion is built big; three quarters of it is given over to the lounge bar, which is filled with tables and chairs to accommodate the diners. In common with most places designed to capture that country pub feel, there’s plenty of tat strewn around, including the usual collection of wicker baskets and pottery. The pictures that cover the walls are at least slightly less random, being mainly pictures of old Portsmouth or pictures with a nautical theme.
Separated from this area by a large central open fire is another bar, this one more concerned with entertainment and the consumption of alcohol than the consumption of food. Here can be found a pool table, a dartboard, quiz machines, fruit machines and an eight-foot large screen. The only problem is that the pool table takes up much of the room of this small bar; it certainly doesn’t allow a large crowd to gather to watch the big screen. If you’re looking for a more juvenile type of entertainment you can try sneaking into the children’s play area, which the pub has provided to keep the kids distracted. This is obviously good for the families who bring their children to the pub, but more importantly, it’s good for those people who go to the pub with the expectation that it’s one of the few places they can reasonably expect to escape from kids. In summer, this isn’t so much of a problem as the children can be thrown out into the large beer garden at the back of the pub.

I found the staff very nice but felt let down by the management.
At the end of the evening we were informed of some certain rules regarding children and this was delivered in an untimely and inappropriate fashion by the management.
Overall food not great but for the money barely acceptable, staff very good accepting the management.
Would I go again NO. Would I reccommend to anyone else NO.
well what can i say, apart from the sub standard food which wasn't too much of a problem cause we were out for a birthday party and happy to maker the most of it, but when we had a slight problem with my nephew thats when the fun started!
to continue, the problem with my nephew was that we had to leave before a certain time, that wasn't stated anywhere in the pub or when we arrived, so we requested that the money that we had paid for our desserts, and had not yet received, back. the landlady arrived, oh my who ever gave her a job! where did she learn how to treat customers that spend over £100 because i suggest that no one ever send them to the same place. we were stared out of the pub after my mum had been spoken to by an rude and offensive woman. i will never be going there again and if anyone likes to be spoken to with respect then i suggest you give the place a miss as well!
Honestly the worst pub I have ever had the misfortune to visit. My family booked a table for 1.00pm and had to wait over 2 hours for our food. The place was filthy. But the mangement were absolutelty unbelievable. The rudest, crudest, most unhelpful woman, who treated every customer as if they were the scum of the earth. So why did we end up there? Simple, how this pub advertises itself and the reality of the place are poles apart. Greene King should be ashamed to have their name associated with this place.
I live in southend essex and i get down to pompey about 4 times a season been in this pub twice and both times very impressed with the service, beer and very friendly welcome wish i could have stayed longer on both occasions to be fair.
Hi guys, this is the pub to go to for away fans.
You won't be alone, but everyones friendly with just a bit of banter.
Definitely the place to go if you just want to go and watch the game, with no fighting etc.
I'm pretty sure this pub has quite recently been taken over by new management, and boy can you tell the difference! Much nicer atmosphere, the new owners are both polite and friendly, something that should be expected. Similar layout to before but for some reason seems much nicer. I went there for some food and a catch up drink with my parents. food was ok for the price.
We visited this place the other day before going to the football and had a different experience to the above review. Although clearly set up for food, their menu was quite small and most people were actually just eating chips. There was also little difference between the two bars with both serving food and both showing the football on large LCD tvs (no sign of a large drop down screen). The pool table had been tucked out of the way of the smaller bar and there was no fruit or quiz machines so there was actually plenty of space.
I didn’t eat there so can’t comment on the food quality but it wasn’t exactly cheap. The beer was good (Speckled Hen) and reasonably priced though. Would definitely recommend for away fans, although I wouldn’t go out of my way to go their if I was a local.
