Pubs in Prague

Resembling Camberwick Green, Trumpton or Chigley, Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic (or Czechoslovakia until the early 90s), was invaded by the Nazis in 1939, invaded by the Soviet Union in 1969 and invaded by a far more sinister foe from the late 1990s onward: Brits on the piss and stag parties, drawn here by the inexpensive cost of beer and the Czechs' insatiable liking for pivo.

While your flight to Prague might be crammed with groups of blokes, intent upon a weekend of hedonism, you'll be hard-pressed to find where they're hanging out in the city at night. Most of Prague's pubs and bars are virtually empty on weekend evenings, and it's difficult to find anywhere with a hint of lairy life and excitement.

Prague's cobbled, slippery streets can literally be a deathtrap after a few beers or more, especially when it’s rainy or where where it's hilly; and beware of any grassy area, which is usually a canine toilet. Many pubs and bars seem to double as video stores and are unable to serve anything less that half a litre of pilsner (about a pint). If you're lucky you might get a litre stein (two pints) for 25Kč - 61p!
